high on wednesday. 48 on thursday. >> we're looking good on the roads. no big delays. construction should be picked up soon. we will have more on that coming up. >>frankie knuckles has died. he was known as the godfather of chicago house music that flooded the club scene in the 70's and 80's. he would go on to work with major artists like michael jackson, whitney houston, and depeche mode. *house music got its name from the music that knuckles played at the warehouse dance club. a stretch of jefferson street, between jackson and madison, was named after him ten years ago. knuckles was 59 when he died at his home yesterday. a cause of death was not released. officials at u-i-c are praising a group of students who helped catch a man suspected of sexually assaulting a student in a shower at her dorm. the attack happened around ten a-m yesterday in the "commons south" dorm, in the 7-hundred block of south halsted.

several students who heard the commotion called u-i-c police, then sprang into action. they rushed the victim to another floor, and held her attacker until officers arrived. i was walking up from class and i see a guy and a girl fighting. i didn't know if there were playing around or if it was a real fight. that's when the girl, she had a row bond and the guy was grabbing her from her waist area. >> u-i-c says the man is not affiliated with the school. the woman received medical attention. the man was arrested and remains in police custody. u-i-c police are now trying to figure out how he got into the dorm. a man tried to lure a boy into his car in the wicker park neighborhood. it happened in an alley, on the 13-hundred block of north claremont yesterday morning. a ten year old boy was walking to school when a man in a black car pulled up and told him to get in. but the boy went to school instead and told an adult. police say the same man may have approached other children a block away, minutes later. he was driving a black four-

door lincoln with white pinstripes. a new tool will soon join the hunt for the missing malaysian jet. an australian ship is carrying a new "black box" finder from the u.s. navy. the ship is expected to reach the search zone in the indian ocean, about a thousand miles west of the australian coast, in a day or so. the new finder can scan the ocean floor for the plane's locator beacon, until its battery runs out in a week. elsewhere, malaysian authorities made a small change in their account of the final words of the plane's crew. instead of just "all right, good night"... the final communication now reads, "good night, malaysian flight 3-7- zero." a cook county judge has dismissed the first lawsuit over the missing malaysian plane. a chicago-based law firm tried to sue malaysia airlines, boeing, and anyone else who may be involved in the plane's disappearance. but the judge said a lawsuit can't proceed until all of the defendants are named. chicago property taxes may be going up... and pension benefits for some city employees may be going down... to help bail the city out of its massive pension debt. randi belisomo is live at city

hall with more. >> a good morning. under the proposal, the owner of a $250,000 home would pay $50 more in property taxes each year starting in 2016. after five years the hike would equal $250 extra. the mayor also proposing to cut retirement benefits for some city workers. his aides say the plans came as talks with more than 30 city unions but not all are on board. city workers would pay 2 1/2% more toward their retirement nation by half a percentage point yearly for five years. employees now pay 8 1/2% for pensions and would ultimately pay 11 percent. that equals $1,500 more in yearly for a city worker. the goal is to eliminate about half of the nineties and a half billion dollars to the pension debt over 40 years. the mayor said it

without changes the municipal fund would be insolvent by 2027. the proposal would not address huge shortfalls for city police, firefighters and teachers. also not addressing state requirement to pay 600 million more toward police fire pension next year that would result in more tax increases and service cuts. the changes would have to be approved by state lawmakers and the governor. >> a huge rush to sign up for healthcare coverage before last night's deadline brought the affordable care act to its enrollment goal of seven million people. those who have begun the process, but not finished, now have an extension. as millions of people logged on to healthcare dot gov yesterday, the system crashed ... just the latest in a series of glitches since its launch six months ago. many people went to sign up in-person at temporary centers, including ann sather's restaurant on belmont. while republicans say americans are opposed to obamacare and plan to make it a

campaign issue, democrats touted the program's benefits. >> i think you will be surprised. you'll find that you can afford it more than you thought. >> we lost too much but we made a dramatic recovery. millions of americans now have had insurance who did not before. we are not going back. >> cook county's hotline for medicaid enrollment also saw a surge in calls yesterday. but there's no need to hurry. the expanded health program for low income people has no deadline for signing up. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. dozens of stolen vehicles have been discovered at a salvage yard on the south side. a police officer's relative reported a car stolen... and when it was traced to adelman's equipment, on east 106-th, police also found about 70 *other stolen cars. an employee of adelman's has reportedly admitted knowing about the theft ring. police and the f-b-i are asking for your help to find a

man and a woman who robbed a bank in east chicago saturday and fired shots at police as they made their getaway. police say both suspects had nine-millimeter handguns when they took over the first merchants bank. they drove off in a dark blue chevy suburban from the '90s with custom rims and clear tail lights. a couple from the north suburbs, and one of their children, were killed in a crash following a police chase in arizona. yuki hirayama was a sophomore at stevenson high school in lincolnshire. he and his parents were killed friday when a pickup truck hit their minivan head-on, on a highway near the grand canyon. the teen's sister survived. police were chasing the pickup for erratic driving. a funeral will be held today for a father and daughter from round lake, who were killed in a small plane crash in florida. services will be held at a church in ingleside this morning for jeffrey bronken, who was piloting the plane ... and his 15-year-old daughter, katie. her friend survived the crash. they were on spring break when their plane went down in clearwater more than a week ago. francis cardinal george was back out in public for a second straight day, after a week-long

hospital stay. the cardinal made an appearance at temple sholom in lakeview for the 19th annual "joseph cardinal bernardin jerusalem lecture". he was recently treated for a stomach infection brought on by his cancer treatment. he says he's still keeping a busy schedule. and in spite of chemo treatments, the cardinal says he feels pretty good. the cardinal says he's still i feel good. i'm still pretty weak. the fill you with all kinds of stuff. but other than that, i am ok. the big thing is a really scared me in terms of infection so i need to be careful. >> planning to travel to rome next month for the canonization of pope john paul the second. opening day at the cell worked out for the fans. the weather was nice, and the white sox won too. fans gave an ovation to paul konerko for what will be his last opening day. but before all that, the parking lots were packed with

24 deaths are confirmed in the massive landslide in washington state... but that will go up after rescuers found three more bodies yesterday. those deaths won't be confirmed until they are identified. 18 of the victims' names are now released. the youngest is a four month old baby, and the oldest was 71. 22-people are still missing,

and most of them are believed to have been on the same road when the landslide hit ten days ago. it left behind mud and debris that is now 70-feet deep in some places. four workers were injured in an explosion at a natural gas processing plant on the washington-oregon border. it happened yesterday morning at the williams northwest pipeline facility, near the washington town of plymouth. the explosion sparked a fire and punctured one of the facilitys two giant storage tanks. homes within a two mile radius were evacuated, and a local highway and railroad tracks were shut down. the evacuation zone was reduced to a one-mile radius last night. police in texas made a shocking discovery at a home just north of houston. in the town of spring, a five- year-old boy was found emaciated, locked in a tiny room beneath a stairwell. further investigation revealed that the boy had been beaten. the discovery was made when police answered a call about a 16-year-old boy fighting with his stepfather.

the older boy was angry about his little brother's treatment. police arrested the stepfather, bradley bleimeyer and his wife tammi on charges of child endangerment. here are a few stories that are trending online this morning ... general motors is recalling another one-point-five million vehicles. this time, to fix a problem that could lead to a sudden loss in power steering. the latest recall includes some saturn ion's, chevrolet h- h-r's and cobalts. g-m has now recalled more than six million vehicles in less than two months. the last one was to fix an ignition switch problem connected to 13 deaths. the automaker's c-e-o will testify before the house energy and commerce committee today about the recalls. some words of wisdom on bullying by wil wheaton have gone viral. last year at an appearance in denver, wheaton was asked by a little girl how to deal with being called a nerd. he described his own experience of being bullied and explained it's really about the bullies feeling bad about themselves.

ocean floor for the plane's locator beacon, until its battery runs out in a week. meanwhile this morning, chinese ships have checked and ruled out 11 locations where suspicious objects were found. elsewhere, malaysian authorities made a small change in their account of the final words of the plane's crew. instead of just "all right, good night"... the final communication now reads, "good night, malaysian flight 3-7- zero." south korea says an unmanned drone plane crash-landed near its maritime border with *north korea. it happened on a south korean island yesterday afternoon. investigators are trying to determine whether north korea sent the drone... and if so, for what purpose. some authorities suspect it was part of the north's spying operation. just last year, north korea released video footage of practice drones crashing into pre-set targets. there may be a sign of hope of a peaceful solution in ukraine. russian president putin reportedly told german's chancellor that he is withdrawing some of his troops

from the ukrainian border. u-s officials said russia had 40-thousand troops stationed there last week. they say a troop withdrawal was necessary for a diplomatic solution. secretary of state john kerry and nato members are meeting today in brussels to discuss a man is in police custody, accused of sexually assaulting a u-i-c student in a shower at her dorm. the attack happened yesterday morning at "commons south" on halsted. some students heard the attack, and held the man until police arrived. u-i-c says the man is not affiliated with the school. dozens of stolen vehicles have been discovered at a salvage yard on the south side. a police officer's relative reported a car stolen... and when it was traced to adelman's equipment, on east 106-th, police also found about 70 *other stolen cars. an employee of adelman's has reportedly admitted knowing about the theft ring. the tribune reports police believe a group of a towing company may have been stealing cars for six months scrapping the vehicles for parts and shipping others overseas.

frankie knuckles has died. he was known as the godfather of chicago house music that flooded the club scene in the 70's and 80's. he would go on to work with major artists like michael jackson, whitney houston, and depeche mode. *house music got its name from the music that knuckles played at the warehouse dance club. a stretch of jefferson street, between jackson and madison, was named after him ten years ago. knuckles was 59 when he died at
